San Gabriel Valley Suburban Watershed Protection Program
The San Gabriel
Valley Suburban Watershed Protection is a coordinated effort that
combines community volunteer participation and educational outreach
with local municipal efforts to plant and maintain trees within the
cities of Monrovia and Arcadia.
Arcadia and Monrovia
are situated at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains, that comprise
much of the local watershed, and are susceptible to severe damage
from runoff, siltation and erosion problems after rain falls or snow
begins to melt in the local mountain and canyon areas. The planting
and maintenance of approximately 615 trees through this project will
help to raise public awareness about urban runoff and erosion issues,
while providing a source of shading.
The program is
funded through a grant obtained by the Upper District under the Watershed,
Wildlife and Parks Improvement Bond Act of 2000 (Proposition 12).
Additional funding is provided directly by the Upper District and
through in-kind services provided by the cities of Arcadia and Monrovia.
